Lake Petocka Fishing Contest

Trout Stock

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released around 1,500 rainbow trout at Lake Petocka on Saturday, April 8, 2023. Magoo's Pizza DSM food truck was onsite selling gourmet pizza (cash or card).

Fishing Contest

After the lake is stocked with beautiful trout, cast a line for one of the specially tagged fish. When you catch a tagged fish, snap a photo and email it to info@cityofbondurant.com. Bass Pro Shops generously donated great prizes! The Parks and Recreation Department will accept tags until the Bondurant Fishing Derby on June 3, 2023. If you have questions, you can contact their office at 515-630-6982.

Please keep the trout you catch and do not release them back into the pond. Take them home and make a tasty dinner. Remember, a valid fishing license and trout stamp are required for those 16 years or older.

Preparing to fish

Get all the details on buying a fishing license, Iowa fishing regulations, and more on the DNR website. In Bondurant, residents and visitors can purchase fishing licenses in-person at Generational Guns, located at 905 Washington Ave SE, Ste B. Review the fishing rules and regulations for Lake Petocka.

Anglers need a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout. The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10. Children aged 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but they must limit their catch to one daily limit. The child can purchase a trout fee, which will allow them to catch their own limit.

Per Iowa's fishing regulations, the daily limit for bluegills is 25. The daily limit for bass is 3, but bass must be at least 15 inches long to keep. Releasing bass back into the water body helps maintain healthy fish populations.
