Mosquito Control Policy

Mosquito

1.         INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the Mosquito Control Policy is to establish and maintain uniform definitions and procedures concerning mosquito control operations for the City of Bondurant. The City will provide such control in a safe and cost-effective manner, taking into account safety, budget, personnel, and environmental concerns.

This policy does not guarantee that the community will be free of mosquito nuisance after the execution of the mosquito control plan. This plan attempts to maintain an adequate level of comfort in the summer activity months for residents and visitors to the community.

2.         MONITORING AND TIMING

The Public Works Department will perform the observation of mosquito nuisance conditions. Public Works staff use data provided by Iowa State University Entomology Department along with ground observations to initiate spray operations.

Mosquito control operations typically run from June 1st to October 15th. This timeframe is modified from season to season depending upon the seasonal conditions and the presence of adult mosquitos.

Adult mosquitos are active during the daytime hours but become the most aggressive around dusk or Sunset. Spraying operations will begin at dusk or sunset. This time period for any day in time can be found almost anywhere and is always posted in the daily papers and on most news stations every day.

3.         SPRAY ROUTES

In order to make the most efficient use of available resources, it is necessary to establish spray routes for mosquito control operations. The community will be divided into 2 spray zones that are to be sprayed on a set schedule so that the public can plan their outdoor activities accordingly.
