Join Us in a Celebration in Bondurant as Eagle Park Phase 1 Completion is Marked with a Spectacular Event

Eagle Park

Eagle Park, a beloved natural retreat in Bondurant, Iowa, has completed Phase 1 of the project to increase access to outdoor recreation, promote native plantings and butterfly gardens,  and installation of stormwater treatment cells. To commemorate this milestone, we invite the community to join us on Monday, June 19 at 5 PM for a joyous celebration immersed in the beauty of nature and highlighted by a butterfly release.

Prepare to be enchanted by delightful butterfly cookies and cake pops by Stop and Smell the Flour, available while supplies last. But this event is so much more than a feast for the senses. It is a testament to our collective vision of transforming Eagle Park into a sanctuary that not only educates but also safeguards the natural habitat of its cherished inhabitants.

Phase 1 encompasses a range of initiatives designed to foster a deeper connection with nature:

  • Soft 8' Walking Paths: A graceful walking trail will wind its way through every corner of Eagle Park, inviting visitors to explore its wonders at their leisure.
  • Mud Creek Access Point: The establishment of a Mud Creek access point creates a connection between humans and the waterway, enabling a deeper connection and appreciation of its beauty.
  • Solar-Powered Charging Benches: Along the walking path, three solar-powered charging benches will be installed for visitors to rest, recharge, and revel in the splendor of their surroundings while staying connected to the modern world.
  • Native Planting Area: A vibrant native planting area will flourish, showcasing a diverse array of flora ideally suited to thrive in Iowa's fertile soil, preserving biodiversity, and absorbing stormwater runoff.
  • Captivating Butterfly Garden: A specially designed butterfly garden will take root, serving as a haven for delicate creatures and essential insects that play a vital role in pollination, nourishing the entire ecosystem.
  • Tree Planting: The planting of 50 trees not only beautifies Eagle Park but also contributes to the preservation of our planet and the overall well-being of the environment.
  • Wayfinding and Interpretative Signage: Guiding visitors along the way, wayfinding and interpretative signage will enlighten and educate, inviting a deeper understanding of this magnificent natural oasis.

The butterfly garden and native planting area hold great significance, providing shelter and sustenance for butterflies and insects, while also preserving biodiversity and protecting against habitat fragmentation. Moreover, these plantings absorb stormwater runoff, ensuring the continuity of the greenway corridor. Eagle Park's commitment to excellence extends to stormwater treatment cells incorporated into the project. These cells capture and purify runoff from impermeable surfaces, diligently filtering out pollutants and safeguarding the purity of the ecosystem. The installation of solar-powered charging stations on the benches showcases the park's dedication to sustainability and invites all visitors to enjoy the tranquil ambiance while staying connected. To further safeguard the natural landscape, a geogrid system is employed for the walking trail, allowing water to permeate the soil while securely holding its particles, thus preventing erosion caused by rainfall.

Spanning a vast 39 acres, Eagle Park proudly stands as the second-largest park in the Bondurant community. Established in 2006, it has been a cherished retreat for nature lovers and wanderers alike.

The impact of these improvements extends beyond the park itself, enriching the lives of residents in neighboring neighborhoods. As Eagle Park integrates seamlessly into the wider park and trail system, it unlocks a tapestry of connections and opportunities. The newly introduced soft trails foster active living, encourage exploration, ignite a sense of adventure, and enhance the quality of life for all who tread upon them. Through the Mud Creek access point, we bridge the gap between humans and nature, granting us the privilege to immerse ourselves in its wonders. Eagle Park becomes an invaluable outdoor classroom, teaching us to cherish and protect our natural heritage. The inclusion of soft trails ensures that every person, regardless of mobility, can partake in the enchantment of Eagle Park.

Join us on Monday, June 19 at 5 PM as we come together, united by our shared love for nature and our unyielding commitment to conservation. The City would like to thank the many partners in this project, including MidAmerican Energy, Meta, the Department of Natural Resources Resource Enhancement and Protection Program, and the Blue Cares Program (donations designated by Nic Robinson).
