Animals Running At Large

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responds to many calls regarding dogs, usually running at large.

Occasionally there is an unfortunate event that a dog may attack a person or other animal. In some cases, after investigating the incident, the dog is declared vicious. Declaring a dog vicious requires the owner to meet certain containment and/or insurance requirements that can be expensive. In almost all cases, the attacks could have been prevented if the owner would have taken the responsibility to make sure the dog is properly contained on their property.

A dog, cat, or a nonhuman vertebrate running at large is a violation of city code. Leashes are required.

Out of respect for your neighbors and for the safety and protection of your pet, take whatever measures are necessary to contain them on your property.

More detail regarding animal protection and control can be located in Chapter 55 of the city code.
