MidAmerican Energy to Transport Large Transformer through Altoona: Traffic Closures Expected on November 5
[Bondurant, Iowa, November 3, 2023] - MidAmerican Energy, in collaboration with the City of Altoona and the City of Bondurant, is set to transport a massive transformer from north Altoona to its facility located on NE 56th St/34th Ave NW. Due to the transformer's immense size, several road closures and traffic interruptions will occur along its designated route. This operation is scheduled to commence at 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 5, and is anticipated to take several hours to complete.
The transportation route, shown on the map below will necessitate the temporary closure of various roads, including the northbound lanes of 1st Ave N, north of the Intrinsic Ag facility (102 1st Ave N), and the entirety of NE 62nd Ave as it turns westward toward MidAmerican Energy's facility.
To ensure the successful and safe transportation of this transformer, the City of Altoona and the City of Bondurant are actively cooperating with MidAmerican Energy. Local law enforcement will be stationed at key intersections to manage traffic, close roads temporarily, and guide the transformer along its route. Once the transformer has passed through a specific area, police and street crews will promptly reopen sections of the route to traffic, followed by closing additional portions as the transformer progresses.
For the safety and convenience of the community, we strongly advise residents and commuters to avoid the designated route between 7 a.m. and Noon on Sunday, November 5. Doing so will help minimize disruptions and facilitate the swift completion of this essential transportation task.
