Black Helmet Ceremony Recipients

In a poignant and heartfelt ceremony held at the Bondurant City Hall Council Chambers on September 5, 2023, the Bondurant Emergency Services welcomed two individuals, Daniel Howieson and Cole Sharp, into their ranks through the Black Helmet Ceremony. This event served not only as a formal induction into the firefighting profession but also as a powerful reminder of the responsibilities that come with the privilege of serving one's community.

The ceremony, led by members of Bondurant Emergency Services, highlighted the significance of the vocation that both Daniel Howieson and Cole Sharp have chosen.  "The vocation that you have chosen is one of honor. The vocation that you have chosen is one of trust. The vocation that you have chosen is one of loyalty," emphasized Director and Chief of Bondurant Emergency Services Aaron Kreuder during the ceremony.

The event underlined the rigorous training and dedication exhibited by both Daniel Howieson and Cole Sharp as they prepared to serve their community. A pivotal moment of the ceremony revolved around the concept of trust, which was symbolized as an enduring legacy passed down through generations of firefighters. This trust, earned with "blood, sweat, and tears" since Benjamin Franklin established the first fire department in 1678, means that the public automatically places their trust in firefighters when they don the black helmet.

Chief Kreuder expressed, "A trust that makes the citizens of this nation comfortable when you enter their homes at their most vulnerable moments and know that no harm will be done; a trust so deep that a mother will freely give you her child knowing that you will protect that child with your life."

Furthermore, the ceremony emphasized the significance of honoring the traditions of the fire service, forged through sacrifice and unwavering dedication. Loyalty, not just to the profession but also to each other, was stressed as a core principle. It was made clear that true loyalty is tested in adversity and that firefighters must stand together, resolute in their commitment to one another and their mission.

In conclusion, the ceremony served as a reminder of the gravity and importance of the firefighting profession. The newly inducted firefighters were encouraged to always remain students of the fire service, to be safe in their endeavors, and to welcome the challenges of the "Greatest Profession in the World."

Bondurant Emergency Services expressed its honor and privilege in welcoming Daniel Howieson and Cole Sharp as members of their cherished community, and the ceremony concluded with the heartfelt words, "It is truly my honor to call each of you a member of the Bondurant Emergency Services!"
