Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement

Jazz and Civil Rights Movement
Event Date:
Thursday, June 23, 2022 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Featuring Master Flutist Galen Galen Abdur-Razzaq!

This program is generally referred to as a Wrap Around. It is a combined lecture and music performance entitled Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement. It begins with a flute prelude performed by Galen.  Following the flute prelude, there will be a 60-minute PowerPoint presentation chronicling the music from the turn of the century to the present day and highlighting various artists, their music, their influence on the evolution of jazz, and their struggles. In addition, it illustrates how jazz became advocacy for the Civil Rights Movement, with proceeds from jazz concerts used to finance major events such as the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington in 1963. The lecture is infused with music demonstrations.
