2013 Eagle Park Master Plan

Project Status:

2019 - Eagle Park planning began.

The proposed Eagle Park improvements were noted in the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Adoption of the Comprehensive Plan included several forms of public input, including public workshops and surveys. The City’s Parks and Recreation Board has also discussed the project at its public meetings on multiple occasions, involving members from the adjacent neighborhoods. Previous work to address the grading in this area to set the table for future improvements was paid for by donations from an adjacent property owner.

The City also solicits public input on its budget and capital plan on an ongoing basis via a website template. This project is included in the City’s capital vision.

October 2021 - The Eagle Park Project is moving forward to add a creek entry spot, as envisioned in the Regional Water Trails Plan. This includes Bioretention cells, native grasses, benches, trees, soft walking trails, and butterfly gardens. Find details about the Regional Water Trails Plan here https://dmampo.org/water-trails/ Learn more about the specific plan with Mud Creek on page 21 https://dmampo.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Four-Mile-and-Mud-Creeks-Engineering-Study.pdf

Meta, formerly called Facebook, has committed $150,000 towards the project and the City is working to secure REAP funds to help with the project, which is planned for construction in the calendar year 2022. The city staff is also working on water quality grants to help with the Bioretention cells.

The first phase of this project will include:

  • Installing an 8' crushed limestone walking trail throughout Eagle Park. Establish a Mud Creek access point.
  • Installing three solar-powered charging benches along the walking path.
  • Establish native planting area.
  • Establish a butterfly garden.
  • Planting 100 trees.
  • Installing wayfinding and interpretative signage.

Future Eagle Park Improvements:

Paved trail connection through Eagle Park to link the neighborhoods east and west. An overlook will be constructed near the detention pond area. The paved trail and overlook improvements will be constructed at a later date.

2021 Eagle Park Conceptual Plan

November 10, 2021

The Natural Resource Commission approved the City of Bondurant's grant application for the FY22 REAP City Parks and Open Space Grants. Bondurant is awarded $100,000 towards the Eagle Park project. Find more details about the funding here.

November 15, 2021

A grant application will be submitted to MidAmerican Energy Company's Trees Please! Grant Program requesting $4,000 in grant funding. This grant program is a 50/50 match program, meaning this will be at least an $8,000 tree planting project. The grant money plus the match will assist in planting approximately 26 trees in Eagle Park. Planting trees in Eagle Park is consistent with the 2013 Park, Trail & Greenway Master Plan. This document guides for the planting of more than 100 trees in Eagle Park. Planting trees in public places is also consistent with the City's 2020 Urban Forest Management Plan. This document notes the City of Bondurant should grow its urban tree canopy by approximately 400 trees over the following decades.

A pre-grant application will be submitted to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship's Water Quality Initiative Grant Program to seek funding to implement the wetland project in Eagle Park.

The Bondurant City Council wishes to make Eagle Park an area where people can interact with nature in a way that educates and preserves the natural habitat of the species who live there. It has been determined that wetlands are necessary instead of retention cells for managing stormwater.

Bondurant City Council has hired a consultant company to establish a detailed conceptual plan and opinion of probable costs for Eagle Park that will include

  • Walking trail throughout Eagle Park
  • Mud Creek access point
  • Stormwater wetlands near the access point*
  • Solar-powered charging benches along the walking path
  • Native planting area(s)
  • Butterfly garden
  • Trees
  • Wayfinding and interpretive signage
  • Disc Golf Course
