Hubbell Avenue Intersection Improvement Project
The Hubbell Avenue (U.S. Hwy 65) intersection at 32nd St. (Git-N-Go convenience store corner) is scheduled to receive a major upgrade in 2014. Improvements will include designated left turn lanes for Hubbell northbound and southbound traffic, a designated right turn lane for Hubbell southbound traffic, traffic signals with advanced warning flashers and improved street lighting. The project will be bid through the Iowa Department of Transportation on March 18. Work will be completed by the end of the 2014 construction season. Upon completion the intersection will look similar to the existing Hubbell Avenue/Grant St. (new Casey's store) intersection.
The estimated cost for the project including engineering and construction is $835,372. The City has received significant funding support from the Iowa DOT and the Des Moines Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The MPO is responsible for allocating federal transportation funds designated for the Des Moines area. The DOT will provide $500,000 and the MPO has offered $306,898 for a total of $806,898 in non-City funding. The City portion will be $28,474, or 3.4% of the total project cost. This is an excellent outcome for the City. The City appreciates the significant support shown for this project by the Iowa DOT and the Des Moines MPO. A schedule showing the start date, work sequence and completion date should be available sometime in April.
