Iowans Helping Iowans - New State Program

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver today rolled out the “Iowans Helping Iowans” flood assistance program, meant to help families and businesses get back on their feet after this summer’s floods. Up to $7.5 million will be provided for homeowner assistance, up to $7.5 million for business assistance, and up to $5 million for unmet needs totaling up to $20 million.

“Right now, there are many Iowans with unmet needs and we are going to help them,” Culver said Monday. “We are going to be certain all Iowans have the resources they need to rebuild.”

Iowans Helping Iowans means the state will come together to use state resources to assist people who have been hit hard by several flooding incidents in the past four months.

Iowans Helping Iowans primarily focuses on housing and business recovery.

Polk County has now been added to the list of counties in Iowa now eligible under the FEMA Individual Assistance Program

Disaster assistance is money or direct assistance to individuals, families and businesses in an area whose property has been damaged or destroyed and whose losses are not covered by insurance. It is meant to help with critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways. This assistance is not intended to restore damaged property to its condition before the disaster. While some housing assistance funds are available through our Individuals and Households Program, most disaster assistance from the Federal government is in the form of loans administered by the Small Business Administration.

How to apply for assistance:
Call 1.800.621.3362, TTY # 1.800.462.7585 or online at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov<http://www.disasterassistance.gov/
Please ask a FEMA representative for further instructions for getting assistance.

In addition to FEMA assistance, Iowa's Department of Human Services is implementing the state Individual Assistance Program. Income guidelines for eligibility are about $40,000 for a family of four and $22,000 for an individual. Iowans who qualify are eligible for up to $5,000 in grants. The number to call is 877-937-3663 or www.dhs.state.ia.us. The application form is available on the DHS website.

SAND BAGS: Location:  3rd St. NW off of Mallard Pointe Dr. NW.
Sand and bags to fill with sand are now available for the public (while supplies last). Please limit your bag use to cover glass (i.e. basement windows and doors). Availability of bags is very limited so take only the minimum needed to cover your basement glass. Please be courteous to your neighbors who are also in need of sand bags.

TRASH PICK UP:  There was an additional trash pick up on Monday, August 16. Due to the large volume of items for pickup, the route has been extended through Tuesday, August 17th. Please note, the trucks will not be revisiting the same areas they have already gone through. This additional pick up is only for residents with water damaged items. Please do not use your toters or include your regular trash items in this pick up as they will be using a specific truck for this pick up. Large and small water-damaged items are allowed (i.e. carpet, furniture). Please make sure to cut carpet and flooring into manageable pieces. Do not include hazardous materials. ONLY WATER DAMAGED ITEMS SHOULD BE LEFT OUT FOR PICK UP.

There was an additional appliance pick up on Monday, August 23rd. Items that were accepted: water heaters, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, microwaves, grills, etc. Please note, computers and TV sets WERE NOT picked up as they are considered hazardous materials.
