Bondurant Community Library Addition

Project Description:

The existing library building is 7,239 SF. This addition project will include additions in the south, east, and northwest areas of the building. These three additional areas will total 7,371 SF. Once completed, the total library square footage will be 14,610 SF. The existing structures at 100 2nd Street NE (former bank building, owned by City) and 106 2nd Street NE (current post office, owned by City) are going to be demolished to allow for this addition and parking lot project to occur. Below is an aerial map that shows the existing site – the highlighted yellow represents the estimated library addition areas.

The next time you visit the Bondurant Community Library, there may be a few changes.  We know it may be a bit inconvenient at times, but we are so excited to begin the process of adding on to your library! The community is growing, and the library also must grow to keep up with the demand from our patrons—YOU!

The project will begin in the next week with the removal of several trees on the property.  One of the additions will extend south to 2nd Street which necessitates the demolition of the old bank building on the corner.  The demolition is scheduled to begin within the next couple of weeks. That new addition will include a dedicated teen area and two new conference rooms for smaller meetings and study groups. An addition to the north will include a dedicated maker space and children’s area, and finally, the addition to the east will include a second entrance leading to a larger community room that can be divided into two smaller rooms.

The bidding process for construction contracts will begin in mid-September with actual construction to start at the beginning of October.  We are hoping the project will be completed in about 9 months, but we know the weather and other complications may occur.

There will be some days the library may need to be closed during this project.  Library staff will communicate about these closings as soon as we know about them.  Library collection and work areas may also need to shift to different areas of the building to accommodate construction crews.  We know you all will be patient with us during this process, and everyone can look forward to the opening of our newly expanded library!

The plan is to begin construction later this summer on a project that will nearly double the size of the library!

August 26, 2020

Demolition of the former bank building along with the removal of trees will begin shortly. The parking lot to the library may be blocked off while crews are on site. Overflow parking is available at City Hall and to the east of the City Hall building. Thank you for your patience!

If you have recently been through the intersection of Grant and 2nd Street, you have seen some changes!  The Old Bank Building (Capitalized in recognition that it was a Bondurant landmark) has been removed to make space for the Bondurant Community Library’s expansion project.  This expansion will mean the library will double in size going from 7,000 square feet to over 14,000 square feet! This makes room for more collection—in all age groups.  Actually, it means more of just about everything—more books, more seating, more computers, more study rooms, more meeting room space, more storage, and more staff workspace.  Also included in the plan is a dedicated maker space (a space used for programming, crafting, sewing, etc.) and a dedicated children’s programming area as well as a new area just for the teens.  The circulation desk will get a new facelift as well.  Believe it or not, this library building is over 12 years old now so the plan will include updated paint and flooring throughout.  The staff members at the library are so excited about the expansion and are very grateful to all of you—the residents of Bondurant—because you are making it possible! Your decision to pass the Local Option Sales and Service Tax has made this project possible. Construction will continue through the winter months.

Projected completion is summer 2021, and the staff members are looking forward to welcoming all of you into the new building!

Groundbreaking

December 8, 2020

  • POD storage units have been placed at the Landus CO-OP gravel parking lot (where the Farmer’s Market was located this summer). Public works will helped staff move items to the PODS.
  • Computers were moved to the Community Room Nov 2, as their current locations are where the temporary walls will be located.
  • Six bookcases were moved to the Community Room on Nov. 6 so the temporary walls can be constructed. Public Works Department was instrumental in making the move happen. The staff has been re-shelving books.
  • The Library stepped back to Curbside Delivery, contact-free Home Delivery, and one person only appointments for computer usage on November 12th. Computers are cleaned after each usage along with contact surface areas such as door handles. The Library building has been closed to the public. Library hours remain the same M-Th 9-7, Fri 9-5, and Sat 9-4.
  • The Library continues to work with the school to serve out School hotspots to 57 BF school families that do not have Internet access in their homes.

The construction crew is making progress! The picture above is of the exterior of the south addition, and the picture below is the interior of that addition.

At the beginning of April, the library will transition all operations to the south and the north additions so crews can complete work on the existing building and the east addition. The library may be closed for a day or two while they move everything into that new space.

Construction is on track for completion at the end of June.

The demolition of the old post office has been complete. The contractor continues to work on the clean-up today, so all library patrons are stressed to use caution around the construction. The new space will make way for additional parking that has been well-needed for many years. Improving Bondurant Every Day!

Crews will be tearing down the concrete near the library exterior book drop and pouring concrete soon, so the after-hours book drop will be closed temporarily for the next couple of weeks. If you cannot return items during business hours, they understand. Give the library a call to extend due dates. 515-967-4790.

The building project enters the final stages. In early July they will be moving the circulation desk back to its original area. We are thankful for all the hard work of the construction workers and project managers. They have helped to create a wonderful space for this community.

A new comic book rack has been ordered, as well as paper racking for the maker space room.
