Lake Petocka is open 6AM to 10:30PM. To accommodate the late night fishermen a free late night fishing permit can be issued. Bring a valid driver’s license into City Hall for a late night fishing permit.

You can find information about hunting and fishing by visiting the Department of Natural Resources website at http://www.iowadnr.gov/ or you may give them a call at (515) 281-5918. Please be sure to follow all rules and regulations to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time.

Trout and catfish are most often caught, but panfish and largemouth bass have also been reported in the lake. Special Trout fee is required.

Fishing Report:

Rainbow Trout - Good: The fall stocking of trout in Lake Petocka will occur on Friday, October 21st at noon. The trout can be caught with a variety of methods including small in-line spinners, spoons, small tube jigs, and wax worms or minnows under a bobber.

Fishing Forecast:

Largemouth bass were sampled in fair numbers from 8 to 16 inches. There is a small population of smallmouth bass present that may provide an occasional catch that ranged in size from 8 to 14 inches. The bluegill population looks very good compared to similar dugout lakes with the larger bluegill ranging in size from 7 to just over 9 inches. A natural die-off of white bass was reported during the summer of 2013, 2015 sampling did not show any white bass present. Channel catfish are present in fair numbers and good size from 13 to just over 30 inches. Rainbow trout are stocked during the fall/winter and persist into June.(2015)

  1. 8' wide asphalt multi-use trail installed in 2005
  2. 2009 Men’s Club built the Petocka South Men’s Club Shelter
  3. 33' x 27' covered and partially enclosed picnic shelter on south side, remodeled in 2011
  4. $40,000 ADA accessible playground installed next to south shelter in 2011
  5. 24' x 18" covered picnic shelter on west side
  6. 24' x 21' covered picnic shelter on east side
  7. Baseball field received new infield, bases, dugouts and upgraded fencing in 2012
  8. 2013 Pergola with Swing built by the Men’s Club
  9. 2016 Restrooms at the South Petocka Shelter installed
